Teaching union the NUT has elected Kevin Courtney, Camden secretary, as its new deputy general secretary. The post has been vacant since Christine Blower was promoted to general secretary, following the death of Steve Sinnott in 2008. Mr Courtney, considered to be on the left of the union, stressed opposition to academies and the new Ofsted criteria during his campaign.
