Nigel de Gruchy, general secretary of the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, has offered to support members if they refuse the additional workload to carry out baseline tests for children entering reception classes. The union, which has around 30 per cent of its 167,000 members in primary schools, led the boycott of national curriculum tests.
