STAFF turned down for performance pay rises should have the right to appeal, the National Union of Teachers will tell key government advisers.

As the School Teachers’ Review Body began consultations over the threshold following the Government’s High Court defeat, the NUT said members were demanding the right to fight decisions.

Some staff in “vanguard” schools - where the process was completed early - saw external assessors overrule their headsand turn down their applications. The NUT is also calling for assessors’ powers to be reined in, requiring them to check only whether heads processed applications fairly.

Education Secretary David Blunkett this week instructed the review body to consult on the standards teachers must reach to qualify for the pound;2,000 pay rise. It must also do so on the application process and on a new duty for heads to assess applicants.
