TWO major associations in further and higher education are to invite other teaching unions to join them in establishing a “council” for post-compulsory education, writes Ngaio Crequer.

Its function would be to consider any issue of general concern and wherever possible to produce a single policy position.

NATFHE, the university and college lecturers’ union, and the Association of University Teachers agreed this week to work more closely to promote common policies and objectives. The two general secretaries have written jointly to their members outlining a new phase in relations between the two unions. They said it would be based on practical constructive joint work organised through a national liaison committee.

Paul Mackney, NATFHE general secretary, and David Triesman, AUT general secretary, said: These proposals will provide a new means of discussing both education policy and industrial issues between our two associations.”
