Universities see teaching schools as allies

Your article on the Government’s teacher training reforms was informative (“Trainers rally as Gove plots a new course for his ‘craft’”, 27 May). But, rather than teaching schools cutting universities out of the picture, we see them as having the potential to bring more schools into active partnerships with higher education institutions (HEI) on the planning and delivery of initial teacher training and continuing professional development.

All teaching school applications have been supported by references from universities, and teaching schools will be required to work in partnership with at least one HEI. Much will, of course, depend on the initial teacher training review. But we see teaching schools as an opportunity rather than a threat.

James Noble Rogers, Executive director, Universities’ Council for the Education of Teachers.
