One of Scotland’s most troubled further education colleges has a new principal. Moray College in Elgin has appointed James Logan, dean of the school of health sciences at Wolverhampton University.

Dr Logan, aged 52, succeeds Robert Chalmers who was suspended pending an investigation into financial irregularities at the college and resigned after being diagnosed with cancer.

The new principal, a graduate of St Andrews, signalled his approach i a presentation to the board of management entitled “from strength to strength with sound finances”. He acknowledged that “the college has some temporary difficulties”.

Dr Logan’s higher education background clearly commended him to a board that wants a stronger role in the University of the Highlands and Islands project. He has personal connections with the Donegal Highlands and was a postgraduate student at University College Galway.
