The Scottish University for Industry, a key initiative in the Government’s lifelong learning strategy, should change its name to reflect its base in further education, the Educational Institute of Scotland says. The union’s view is shared by John Wheatley College in Glasgow.

Responding to Opportunity Scotland, the Green Paper published last September, the EIS says it is “disappointed” the proposals do not spell out how low-income groups can be financially supported. The union also calls for a review of the “incoherent” funding available for the 16-18 age-group.

The college warns that adult education programmes targeted at non-participants in socially excluded areas should be free. “These students need additional financial incentives to attend,” the college says.
