THE General Teaching Council for England should put off work on its code of conduct for the profession because teachers are already subject to school and education authority disciplinary and capability procedures, says the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers. And a draft professional code, currently out for consultation, shouldbe restyled as a “statement” of values, the union says. It believes that the document - which aims to set out the beliefs, values and attitudes underlying the profession - should be used mainly as guidance for those considering teaching as a career. See www.gtce.org.uk for more details. Consultation on the professional code closes on July 20.
