It’s not often that Glasgow folk, especially teachers, decline the offer of a refreshment. The Educational Institute of Scotland, however, had no difficulty in turning down the directorate’s suggestion that teachers would benefit from an unpaid sabbatical or “mid-career refreshment”, as they called it.
In Edinburgh, of course, the directorate would have avoided the embarrassment of a knock-back by couching its offer in altogether more refined terms. “You’ll have had your unpaid sabbaticalmid-career refreshment, then?”
