Forget selecting pupils by aptitude or postcode. A Japanese girls’ school is picking them based on their chopstick skills.

Hisatagakuen Sasebo girls’ high has introduced the test of etiquette and dexterity for all candidates hoping to join the school in April.

The 15 and 16-year-old girls must demonstrate their ability to transfer marbles, beads and beans from one plate to another using only a pair of chopsticks.

The test comes amid concerns that Japanese youth are losing touch with traditional culture and table manners.

The school also includes flower-arranging and Japanese tea ceremonies in its compulsory curriculum.
