Vivendi Universal, the French multinational publisher of popular titles like Adi, launched a global education portal - Education.com - at Milia, the multimedia fair in Cannes. French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin launched the site. Vivendi, which claims it is second only to Pearson as an educational publisher, says it is the first to have created an international education site. It is tareted at France, Germany, the UK and the US and is in three languages - French, English and German (Spanish later this year). Vivendi boss Agnes Touraine, claims that this is a serious venture for Vivendi with initial funding of $25 million (pound;17.8m). She says that sites have been produced in accordance with the local curriculum. The portal has a target of breaking even by 2002.
