Hong Kong socialites were thrown into confusion when the visit of John Major coincided with that of John Mavor, principal of Napier University.
Several people invited to a dinner for Mavor, who was in the colony to support a Pounds 350,000 fund to send at least six Hong Kong students to his university, thought they had been invited to meet the Prime Minister, and vice versa.
The island’s social reporters do not record who was judged to cut the greater dash.
