East Lothian pupils have been urged to take to the beaches over the summer holidays - to hone their volleyball skills.

From Monday to Friday (July 2-6) at North Berwick’s East Beach, Margaret Ann Fleming, East Lothian’s volleyball development officer, is running a beach camp (10.30am-12 noon). The camp is for children aged 8-12.

(Beginners welcome; sessions cost pound;1 each.) Beach volleyball has taken off in Scotland, with a five-venue circuit for top players throughout the summer and a city centre event for Britain’s elite players at Edinburgh’s Princes Street Gardens (July 19-22).

The Scottish circuit - which takes in Portobello, St Andrews, Broughty Ferry, Troon and North Berwick - will have junior events this year, with youngsters encouraged to chance their arm.

The sport gained full Olympic status in 1996, when pupil Audrey Cooper represented Britain. Players are now being sought for the 2012 Olympics in London, with a volleyball centre set up at Bath University.
