Scotland’s opening match in the Mayfest series against Luxembourg this month brought an emotional return to Stonelaw High, in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, for Alistair Galloway and Stewart McGrenary, who are both old boys.

About 300 pupils crowded into the school sports hall to witness the first international volleyball match to be played there.

Scotland narrowly lost a five-set match but recovered to win the series 2-1 after winning the remaining matches at the Holyrood Sports Centre and Kelvin Hall in Glasgow.

“It was a unique arrangement to have two of the squad going back to their former school but it made for a terrific atmosphere at the event,” says Kenny Barton, chief executive of the Scottish Volleyball Association.
