* Two new private schools companies, VT and Gems, are convinced that administration costs can be kept low if their schools are federated and administered centrally (“Private schools head switches firms”, TES, May 27).

Those of us who worked in education before the introduction of local management of schools will remember that this was the function of local education authorities before our politicians decided that each school should, in effect, be its own LEA, creating an inflationary wage spiral that has pushed up education costs to record heights. The Government should learn a lesson from these firms and restore the pre-1988 budget-friendly functions of LEAs rather than encourage more and more profit-making in education.
