The Aberdeen conference heard an upbeat message from John Stodter, the city’s director of education, in which he stressed that Scottish education had changed for the good in a number of respects. There were, of course, one or two exceptions. “When Rip Van Winkle woke up, the only thing he recognised was the promoted post structure in the Scottish secondary school.”
