TES journalists have been contacting schools to find out the effect on education of dark world events, such as the Iraqi conflict. The reluctance of many heads to even discuss such a controversial issue has been striking but one head’s paranoia was exemplary. Our reporter’s questions were met with a barrage of “no comments” and an abrupt slamming down of the phone.

Five minutes later, the head rang back to ask: “Are you tracing my call?”
