Waste not, want not is key to ICT

Having read the article on waste and ICT, I want to explain how we cut costs (“Byte the dust”, TES Magazine, July 30). My husband has always helped me to manage ICT in the school, and when he was made redundant he set up his own ICT business.

Mike has repaired and recycled laptops for us, so there is little waste. When something breaks, he finds the best-value fix. He encourages staff to use free software - many staff only know Microsoft products, so need to learn about alternatives.

Without his help we might be looking at the slow decline of ICT in our school. The Government should encourage schools to share what is working well on ICT.
