It is a chant intended to instil fear in the bravest of enemies. Or, in this case, to convey respect and admiration for a much-loved teacher.

Hundreds of staff and students at Palmerston North Boys’ High School in New Zealand lined the streets of their town and performed a haka in tribute to PE teacher Dawson Tamatea.

The traditional foot-stamping Maori war dance, known around the world thanks to the All Blacks rugby team’s pre-match performances, was performed by the entire school as the hearse carried Mr Tamatea’s coffin through the streets.

Mr Tamatea taught at the school for nearly 30 years, eventually teaching maths as well. His funeral was held last month in the school hall, and was streamed online.
