Nick Gibb might have thought that he had got the easier gig when he agreed to speak at the ATL teaching union’s conference in Liverpool this Easter.

The association has traditionally been seen as the most moderate of the big three classroom union conferences. But the schools minister got an even tougher reception this morning than his boss Nicky Morgan did during her provacative speech at the NASUWT teaching union’s conference last week.

Mr Gibb drew laughter, jeers and heckles as he stated the case for the Government’s flagship academisation plans. At one stage, former TES editor Gerard Kelly, who was hosting the Q&A session, had to step in to ask members be more “polite” . Watch the video here:
