It is likely to be the last thing the head of Ofsted would have wanted when he nipped into a pub in Westminster for a cheeky mid-afternoon pint.

Sir Michael Wilshaw stepped into the Westminster Arms in central London only to be confronted by a group of angry sixth-form teachers who were taking a break from strike action over proposed funding cuts to sixth-form colleges

The resulting video shows the chief inspector being taken to task by Islington NUT assistant secretary Ken Muller for the effect Ofsted has on schools, and also being lambasted for teachers getting the blame for the poor performance of academies and free schools.

Sir Michael highlights the letter he wrote to education secretary Nicky Morgan about his concerns over the “serious weaknesses” of some academy chains. He tells the teachers that he got “into a lot of trouble with the department [for Education] over that”.

The video was uploaded to YouTube by a group called Reel News, which describes itself as a “London-based activist video collective set up to document and publicise inspirational struggles against the neoliberal agenda in Britain and worldwide”.

Despite Sir Michael’s robust defence of his track record, the former headteacher leaves the pub to jeers and heckling from the group.
