This 26-part television history of the 20th century, with an emphasis on first-hand memories, this week considers the slaughter of the First World War. Eye-witness accounts of life and death on the western and eastern fronts are given by veterans from Britain, Germany and Russia.

q Old School Ties: This is the Real World. BBC2, Thursday, September 21, 7.30-8.00pm. The limitations on educational choices for disabled children are examined.
