After a summer of wartime anniversary programmes, the documentary makers are now digging into the archives for retrospectives on the century. In this history series, John Tusa produces his own journey through the 20th century, this week considering the roles of Stalin, Hitler and Mao.

q People’s Century: 1914 Killing Fields. BBC1, Wednesday, September 20, 10.00-11.00pm. This 26-part television history of the 20th century, with an emphasis on first-hand memories, this week considers the slaughter of the First World War. Eye-witness accounts of life and death on the western and eastern fronts are given by veterans from Britain, Germany and Russia.

q Old School Ties: This is the Real World. BBC2, Thursday, September 21, 7.30-8.00pm. The limitations on educational choices for disabled children are examined.
