I WAS intrigued by your lead story, it takes me back nearly 30 years. It was high turnover of some pupils in schools throughout the country that first prompted the then National Association of Schoolmasters to call for a national curriculum.
Association members at the time were concerned that without a structured core national curriculum followed in every school then high pupil mobility would prevent a consistent and balanced curriculum being on offer to the nation’s youngsters.
I cannot resist the temptation again to remind politicians that far from resisting change, teaching unions were often years ahead of them. Disagreements were often about how change was introduced, not the principle itself.
