Graduate employment rise

The graduate employment picture is improving, according to the Higher Education Statistics Agency. Some 68.9 per cent of graduates finishing university last year were working within six months, up from 66.2 per cent in 2008-09. Scottish universities are slightly better at getting students into work or further study (92.2 per cent) than those in England (90.2). Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University was one of the highest-ranking institutions, with 95.7 per cent of graduates in work or studying.

Call for media to treat Gaelic fairly

Some sections of the Scottish media’s coverage of Gaelic has gone beyond fair comment and good taste, according to Aberdeen University honorary professor Kenneth MacKinnon, who studied newspaper clippings for a year. Reports about public spending on Gaelic sometimes degenerated into inaccuracy, prejudice and mockery, he found.

A boost for Lossiemouth

Defence Secretary Liam Fox has announced a reprieve for RAF Lossiemouth in Moray. RAF Leuchars in Fife is to close and along with Moray’s RAF Kinloss - whose closure was announced last year - will be used to accommodate troops instead. Moray education officials had feared the worst-case scenario could reduce by 10 the number of primary schools in the area. Fife bosses indicated earlier this year that losing RAF Leuchars would trigger a review of the north-east Fife school estate.

Online bullies are bullied online

Children who bully online are often being bullied online by others, a survey of 25,000 European people aged 9-16 has found. The same research, by EU Kids Online, found that 93 per cent of internet users in that age bracket had, while online, never bullied others or been bullied.

Clarification

TESS last week reported the launch of the City of Glasgow College, including its Riverside project. In fact, the college as a whole had been launched previously; it was only the pound;6.8 million Riverside project - a marine skills centre, jetty and pontoon - that was officially completed this month.
