Every year the 200 children at Penyfro primary school have a fund-raising week for Unicef. And the United Nations’ agency office in Cardiff tells them that they consistently raise more than any other school in Wales. This year the total was nearly pound;1,000, which will go to Zambia. The theme was the millennium, so on the Friday everyone left their uniform at home and came to school dressed as a famous person from the last 1,000 years, though most chose a character from the last century. During the week, which this time was organised by teacher Mrs Ann Lisle, lessons are held on the country the money will go to - it’s a different one each year - and pupils pass on their knowledge to the rest of the school at the final assembly. weets, biscuits and toast are sold during break, and parents donate toys and books for a bring-and-buy. The three male teachers, out of a staff of 10, dyed their hair blue and pitted themselves as goalies against all-comers. And school cook Mrs Lesley Bevan made a special lunch for governors and staff.
