THIS WEEK - 7-13 SEPTEMBER 2013
SATURDAY
Passing the baton
Marin Alsop became the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in its 118-year history. The event at London’s Royal Albert Hall included the traditional singalong to Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.
SUNDAY
Grey power salute
Pipe and slippers at the ready, it’s national Grandparents’ Day in the US. The event was founded by Marian McQuade, a West Virginia housewife who wanted to encourage children to tap into their elders’ wisdom.
MONDAY
Fantasy league
The Lotus Esprit “submarine car” from the 1977 Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me fetched #163;550,000 at auction in London. Underpaid teachers will have to stick to their sub-aquatic bicycles for now.
TUESDAY
Credit where it’s due
Fifty years ago exactly American Express credit cards came to Britain. Cash was still very much the payment method of choice so the move caused a flurry of excitement across the credit community. Now look at us.
WEDNESDAY
Ground zero remembered
The horrifying events of 11 September 2001 are still raw in Americans’ memories. Thousands of people took part in events to commemorate the victims of the World Trade Center and Pentagon terrorist attacks.
THURSDAY
Targeted action
Should countries make money from selling weapons to dodgy dictators? Campaigners against the Defence and Security Equipment International arms fair, which took place in London this week, don’t think so.
FRIDAY
Double whammy
Another Friday 13th! The doom-laden day makes teachers fear all kinds of classroom calamities. And, as if that wasn’t enough, it’s Roald Dahl Day as well - billed as a date for mayhem and mischief.
NEXT WEEK - 14-20 SEPTEMBER 2013
SATURDAY
Who’s sorry now?
Religious studies teachers alert: the Jewish festival of Yom Kippur is taking place. Jews across the world will fast and atone for their sins. The wearing of leather shoes, make-up and perfume are all forbidden.
SUNDAY
Privilege pass
Failed to gain access to the hallowed quads of Cambridge on academic merit? The free Open Cambridge event is your key to unlocking hidden parts of the university, including some gardens and libraries.
MONDAY
Facing a face-off
The Lib Dem conference in Glasgow promises to be tense, as the coalition with the Tories continues to rile members, including MP Sarah Teather, who has said she will stand down at the next election.
TUESDAY
Game on - Again
You wouldn’t think a fifth edition would be necessary, but Grand Theft Auto V is released in the UK today, allowing kids to rampage across a fantasy Southern California. Better than stealing cars in real life, I suppose.
WEDNESDAY
Smart grannies
The charity Age UK is holding its ITea and Biscuits Week to encourage older people to use digital devices such as smartphones and computers. Granny, you know you can’t change the channel with my iPhone ...
THURSDAY
Number crunch
The London Assembly has set up a special panel to investigate a massive shortfall in school places in the UK capital. It meets for the first time today. Now, children, how many of you can fit in that telephone box?
FRIDAY
How to Beat the blues
Many schools will be ditching uniforms to take part in the annual Jeans for Genes fund-raising day. Money raised from this rock’n‘roll action will support the care of children affected by genetic disorders.
