THIS WEEK - 8-14 JUNE 2013

SATURDAY

Only human

Can’t concentrate? Can’t stop eating? Genes are blamed for pretty much everything these days. Experts gathered in Paris for the annual European Human Genetics Conference to share their latest research.

SUNDAY

Tuned in

Monte Carlo played host to its 53rd Television festival, as TV aficionados flocked to the city to find out who had received a Golden Nymph award. Donald Sutherland picked up a lifetime achievement gong.

MONDAY

Striking a chord

Musical prodigies from around the world tickled the ivories and brandished their bows to impress the judges at the Aram Khachaturian International Competition in Armenia. Young composers also competed.

TUESDAY

Out in the open

Wasted resources were the theme of National School Grounds Week, which took place in the UK. Teachers and children were encouraged to move lessons outdoors so that everyone could breathe some fresh air.

WEDNESDAY

True grit

Big questions were tackled at the annual conference of UK body the Girls’ Day School Trust, as delegates in London conferred on the theme “A rocky road to the top: grit, resilience and the path to female leadership”.

THURSDAY

Hell on wheels

Cycling may be fashionable right now but the two-week Race Across America is not for the faint-hearted. The 3,000-mile bike ride takes in scorching desert, windswept plains and chilly mountain weather. Pack a cagoule.

FRIDAY

Pet hates

Poop Scoop Week is taking place in the UK. Run by the Dogs Trust, the event encourages dog owners to pick up their animal’s poo - and to stop hanging the resulting bag on a fence post and walking away.

NEXT WEEK - 15-21 JUNE 2013

SATURDAY

Autism answers

Thousands of people are expected to attend the Autism Show in London to hear leading speakers on the subject and share experiences. Autism’s Got Talent will also be looking to find great new acts.

SUNDAY

Hooray and up she rises

What shall we do with the drunken sailor? This will surely be the question on the lips of the thousands of sea dogs gathering at Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival in Cornwall, England.

MONDAY

Praying for precipitation

Bored with the rain in your local area? Don’t be. Today marks World Day to Combat Desertification, held to highlight the economic and environmental issues resulting from certain regions drying out.

TUESDAY

Harry who?

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who most famously played a certain boy wizard, will star in a new production of The Cripple of Inishmaan in London. But will it be as popular as his naked outing in his first stage role in Equus?

WEDNESDAY

Amble rewards

To the saunterers, an ordinary pace seems like intense physical exercise. World Sauntering Day will be celebrated today, reminding us to relax and enjoy life. Why not stop to admire the sunset?

THURSDAY

Far from home

People who have been displaced by war, disaster or persecution are the focus of World Refugee Day. The campaign aims to raise awareness of their plight with events in more than 100 countries.

FRIDAY

A Festival atmosphere

Educational bigwigs from across the UK and beyond will gather for the Festival of Education in London. Expect debates on everything from child psychology to political interference in education.
