To make a full and fair comparison between primary and secondary age-weighted pupil units (TES, May 24): * The actual cost per unit place for primary and secondary needs to be compared.
* The differences in costs between separate infant and junior schools rather than primary need to be made clear.
Local education authority support services, for example, often go more to primary rather than secondary pupils. The decision on the equity of primary versus secondary funding must be on educational grounds, but age-weighted pupil units are not the full story.
