The Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction event, which supposedly wiped out the dinosaurs, may have been caused by asteroid collision or volcanic activity. The surviving mammals and birds were the omnivores, who ate insects and larvae, which fed on detritus. The victims were the pure herbivores, whose food depended on sunlight, now severely reduced, and the pure carnivores.
