The water in Lake Vostok, the largest subglacial lake in Antarctica, lies under 4km of ice sealed more than half a million years ago. If microbes are found there, it would be the best clue to whether life exists elsewhere in the solar system, as conditions are similar to oceans on Europa, a moon of Jupiter.
