Penguins are not confined to freezing climates and around half of the estimated 20 species live in temperate zones. The African penguin, for example, enjoys the warm weather of south-west Africa, while the Galapagos penguin lives on the equator, on the islands 600 miles west of Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean, where the temperatures are cooled by the Humboldt current.
