Archimedes, the Greek mathematician and scientist whose discoveries include measuring an object’s volume and density by immersion in water, developed weapons to defend the city of Syracuse when it was besieged by the Romans in 212BC. He organised catapults and ballista (like an ancient crossbow) and supposedly used mirrors to set fire to Roman ships. He was killed by a Roman solider against orders that he should remain safe.
