The province of Chubut in Patagonia, southern Argentina, has had a Welsh-speaking colony since the 19th century. It was founded by Michael D Jones, a preacher, who believed that Welsh immigrants elsewhere, especially in the USA, tended to lose their identity too quickly. He chose Patagonia partly because of its great distance from English influence. Settlement began in 1865 and presently numbers 20,000.
