As a schoolgirl, Charlotte Church (pictured, aged 11) would have been a major draw at annual concerts. So perhaps it is no surprise that inspectors found almost all Year 7s at her alma mater, Howell’s School in Cardiff, “could sing in tune”.
“Music is certainly something we celebrate,” said head Sally Davis. “Anyone can have a go - you don’t have to be a wonderful musician.”
And while hymn practice is no longer on the curriculum, it is available at lunchtime.
“We pack out Llandaff Cathedral every year with our concert,” said Mrs Davis. “Music and singing really is at the heart of the school - it positively drips with it.”
