For the first time, the Welsh Assembly has threatened to intervene and take over a failing education authority unless it makes a rapid improvement in the next two months. An inspection by the Welsh inspectorate, Estyn, found there had been a breakdown in relations between the and its schools. The Vale of Glamorgan covers a mix of rural and urban areas from Penarth to Llantwit Major and Cowbridge. It has 50 primary and eight secondary schools.
The report said the LEA was poor at giving support for school improvement, planning for school places, admissions arrangements and asset management. It also revealed that staff in schools felt professionally isolated and received inadequate support.
The authority was given 70 days to draw up an action plan.
