Glan Ely High School in Cardiff is the first secondary school in Wales to be identified as failing by school inspectors.Four out of ten classes in maths and English were deemed unsatisfactory, as were 65 per cent of classes in science. A majority of pupils lacked the necessary basic literacy and numeracy skills to enable them to progress in their subjects. Wales’s education minister, Rod Richards, said: “The school is not tackling under- achievement as it should and the majority of pupils are not benefiting from their education,” he said. Glan Ely now has 40 days to prepare an action plan to improve the situation.
