Your job and career questions answered

I train through the graduate teacher programme (GTP) employment-based route into teaching in Wales?

Yes. In 2004-05, the Welsh Assembly Government will offer at least 60 places with grant support for maintained schools under the GTP and the registered teacher programme (RTP). The Assembly also pays for qualified teacher status assessment at the end. Grant-funded places will be targeted at subject areas with the greatest shortages. The majority of places will be considered for applications in secondary priority subjects: mathematics, science, modern foreign languages, ICT, design amp; technology, Welsh and English (including drama). Other secondary subjects may be considered if places are available.

A small number of places will be available for primary applications for Welsh-medium posts. Potential trainees may have to find a school willing to train them. Details of the GTP and RTP are available from the Assembly’s Department for Training and Education, tel: 029 2082 5838; e-mail: teachingenquiries@wales.gsi.gov.uk.
