What are the best ‘work shorts’ for male teachers?

For as long as anyone could remember, male teachers in shorts was a no-go area for schools. It did not matter how hot the classroom got, a sweaty teacher was better than one with bare legs.

But it seems the tide is turning. According to recent discussions on social media, some schools are allowing men to wear shorts in the classroom.

This presents those men with a problem: if this freedom of the knees is to spread to other schools, they need to make sure it is seen to be a ‘good thing’. That means they need to make the right fashion choices.

As a teacher of the only subject where shorts are not just allowed but are virtually mandated, I am in a good position to advise.

Tune in gents, here’s your workwear shorts guide for the summer.

1. Tailored shorts

This is the obvious go-to for workwear shorts: they can easily match shirts, blazer jackets and smart shoes. If we are playing safe, this is what we should be buying.

However, there is one issue: length.

Most tailored shorts sit above the knee - how high above the knee will determine whether you look like you belong in a classroom or in a beach bar somewhere on the Mediterranean.

2. Cargo shorts

The appeal of cargo shorts as a teacher is obvious: pockets. And loads of them. In these pockets we can store board pens, detention slips, projector controllers, snacks…

But with pockets come fashion problems: they frankly look ridiculous with proper shoes, so unless you are braving it with flip-flops (don’t), put the cargo shorts away.

And anyhow, don’t teachers have enough workload problems without the added time needed to remember which of your 400 pockets holds what you need next?

3. Sports shorts

If you are a PE teacher, of course, this is what you wear.

But if you’re not?

Basketball shorts are only OK if you’ve actually got a basketball in your possession at all times. Rugby shorts are a bold move given the length. Swim shorts? Don’t be ridiculous.

Sports shorts are for those intending to move around a lot. So unless you are a very, very progressive teacher, these are not for you.

4. Hawaiian shorts, board shorts, short shorts

Don’t. Just, don’t.

Never wear clothes you find funny.
