What do PGCE colleges want?

I read with interest of the shortage of teachers and the fall in applications for postgraduate certificate in education courses.

I have just received notification of my failure to gain a place on a primary PGCE course at my first-choice teacher-training establishment, St Martin’s in Lancaster.

I was not even granted the courtesy of an interview. The only reason given was the simple statement: “Unsuccessful”. I have PhD and a BA(hons) and have held down professional employment for the past 15 years, my present post being at an English university. I also have two weeks’ recent classroom experience specified as a requirement in St Martin’s prospectus.

Perhaps someone could enlighten me as to what is required to gain an interview, let alone a place on a PGCE course?
