Parents applauded at the annual congregation of University College, Bangor, on Monday, when a student refused his BA degree because the University of Wales “has disowned the Welsh language”.

The student, Mr RP Griffiths, aged 21, said to the assembled parents in Welsh: “For almost two years we, the students, have asked again and again for the Welsh language to be given a place of merit in the college. The authorities have refused all substantial requests.

“The fight will continue, but for me this is the final opportunity. I refuse the degree and shall continue to do so while the university is so hostile to the Welsh language.” He then repeated his declaration in English.
