“One of our teaching assistants has the extra responsibility of running a lunchtime homeworkorganisational skills club for boys (and girls) who are like this. She checks their diaries, sets them off on their homework, checks they’ve got the right equipment and generally tries to encourage them. Of course, they have to remember to get to the lunchtime club in the first place.
“We also have special rewards for certain boys who can achieve targets: bringing equipment, turning up on time, doing homework, and so on. But other pupils who always do this, and yet get nothing, feel that there’s something rather unfair about the system. One boy even said to me that it would be worth his while to ‘get messed up’ and then improve a bit in order to get the rewards his mates do.”
