Technophiles attending Scotland’s first e-learning conference must have thought there had been an error in the programme when they saw the first name of one speaker. There was no mistake, however.

Jimm Meloy is an expatriate Scot now plying his IT trade in Silicon Valley, California (power cuts permitting) The extra “m” is an abbreviated and imaginative relocation of his middle name, McDonald. Only in California would anyone get away with such cheek. But since the conference was in Glasgow, it was inevitable that in the (few) moments of ennui some delegates would be even cheekier and add a final “y”.
