Judith Gillespie said in her farewell address as convener that headteachers can make life difficult for PTAs. “A headteacher in Dumfries and Galloway told parents they were ‘not allowed’ to hold a children’s Hallowe’en party,” she said.
A Glasgow parent on benefit was referred to the Department of Social Security’s “clype line” because of her voluntary work for the PTA cake stall.
But PTAs with their voluntary involvement had survived the advent of school boards, although she had initially thought they might not.
Mrs Gillespie, who leaves the organisation with more than 1,000 members, stressed that the SPTC will continue to “speak fearlessly”.
