In case you thought researchers spend too much time pointing out the bleeding obvious, reassurance is at hand.

Indeed, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals says it has drawn some “stark conclusions” from its research - a survey of “learning resource provision” in colleges.

It says: “College senior managers may feel that they are providing a full, effective and efficient library when, in fact, they are simply making available an open space that lends books and has access to the Internet.”

Well, who would have though it!
