I was delighted to see Peter Wright (TESS, February 4) openly saying that S1-S2 should be enjoyed. If learning is enjoyable, learning is more effective. Of that, I have no doubt.
Regarding the point he made about Muriel Gray’s comment that 60 per cent in a poll had no idea what Auschwitz was, I can understand why so few have heard of it. Pressure is on to achieve results.
To achieve results, teachers must concentrate on the content and skills necessary to achieve results. If Auschwitz is needed, then it will most certainly be mentioned; if not, then justify spending valuable time on it.
Sadly, that is the pressure teachers are under - achieve results and make sure you do not waste time on “irrelevancies”.
