Pupils from Coatbridge High are off to Rome (pictured) after reaching the finals of a competition run by the Italian government to create a healthy eating video.

The Food 4U Awards now in its third year, and organised by Italy’s ministry of agriculture, nutrition and forestry policies are open to 14 to 19-year-olds in 15 European countries.

Youngsters are asked to create a video “on the need and importance of a healthy and balanced diet”, with the top two entries from each country making it through to the final in Rome.

Coatbridge High’s entry, It’s your life, was one of the two UK winners. And today, seven pupils and two teachers head to Italy’s capital city for six days in the hope that their video will win the Food 4U Award 2007.

It’s your life, which is less than a minute long and created by S3 pupils, focuses on that teenage pet hate: being told what to do and in this case, what to eat by adults. However, it warns they are also being manipulated albeit often more subtly by multi-million pound advertising campaigns run by fast food companies.

The video concludes that youngsters should make their own choices.
