I am in one of Europe’s most romantic cities. A great composer died here after drinking the water, and one of literature’s greatest heroines danced her first ball here in one of the fine Baroque waterfront palaces. Built on a swamp and the blood of thousands of conscripted soldiers, it has witnessed palace coups and red revolution. A million people died during a 900-day siege. In the early days of the fighting, Adolph Hitler had restaurant menus printed ready for a victory banquet at the city’s Astoria Hotel. He never made it.

The first reader to guess where Jeremy Sutcliffe is wins a copy of Children Just Like Me by Anabel and Barnabas Kindersley. Answerson a postcard to Where Am I? The TES, Admiral House, 66-68 East Smithfield, London E1 9XY The correct answer to last week’s Where Am I? is the Isles of Scilly
