Where am I?

It’s August, but the white sandy coves are crowded only by gulls. The sun’s blaze is relieved by the occasional storm, pausing on its journey from the New World to the mainland of the Old. In the belly of a mermaid, visiting mariners grow tipsy under the baleful eyes of a painted giantess, and just across the lagoon, her sisters rest their weary timbers in Valhalla. It’s a place where the environmental clock stopped in 1920, boats replace cars, hens roam free, and a bishop used to wink at a prime minister. I’m walking through a tropical forest to bathe in a clear and icy sea.
