Disappointment will be one of the themes in David Cleghorn’s address as outgoing president. “I have been disappointed at the way college managements have used restructuring as a cloak to cut costs,” Mr Cleghorn says.

“I am also disappointed that the new Government has not backed up Tony Blair’s emphasis on ‘education, education, education’ with ‘cash, cash, cash’. Around Pounds 12 million has been taken out of the FE sector over the past three years, the equivalent of closing Falkirk and two smaller colleges.

“You cannot lose that amount of money and not expect to have any impact. ”
