US First Lady Michelle Obama has announced a year-long mentoring programme for high school girls in Washington. They will be tutored by mentors, senior female staff at the White House, on a range of issues from careers and financial literacy to how to write a college essay to health and fitness. The germ of the idea was planted in March when Mrs Obama invited a star-studded array of women, from entertainers to maths geniuses, to share their stories with students. At a subsequent White House dinner for the group, she declared it “the best thing we’ve done so far”.
